From London to Oz

Posted 7 November 2011 by Spencer Wallace

I spent 15 years in Australia working in various print/media roles, returning to London in May 2010. I missed my family and watching football at a decent hour!

Before I left for Australia in 1995, I had worked in print in the traditional manner – 3 year apprenticeship as a final film bench planner (anybody know what that is?). I started in 1987 and worked up until I left for Australia as a film planner.

In Australia I worked in this role up until 1999, where I then converted to the mac (they were a bit slower back then!). As most of us know this changed the world in the way we work, but coming from this traditional background gave you a great understanding of the nuts and bolts of composing a printed/online piece.

Coming from a traditional print arena – does anybody know what an FOC was? Banging out?

Australia at this stage was 2-3 years behind the UK and I was working for the Murdoch empire (for my sins). This was a very busy time, working with all the worldwide agencies – Ogilvy & Mather, George Patts etc on large accounts but Oz rapidly caught up over the next few years. This could be applied to many facets of life – music, fashion, film etc etc. Australia has now caught up massively with the UK and in some cases leads the UK in various fields.

The best thing about working in Australia was the weather and the relaxed but dedicated, competent professional way in which the Aussies went about their work producing amazing projects day in day out. Working alongside, talented pommies, why would that not be the case?

This is the same, excellent attitude I have found at Nirvana and the people operate in much the same way as the Aussies going about their business, only difference is the weather………….

As a dedicated sports fan it is easy for a pommie to fit into the Aussie way of life and highly recommend it to anyone considering the move down under.
