Every two years, on the occasion of each World Cup and European Championship since 2002, we have collaborated with our good friends at graphics and branding agency Studio Blackburn to produce football wall charts that stand out from the crowd. A combination of our sporting passion and love of all things graphic and print-based, it’s a biyearly mode of self-expression, allowing us to explore innovative production techniques that complement Studio Blackburn’s consistently excellent visuals.
This year is no exception. Ahead of the 2016 European Championship in France, we set to work conceptualising a twenty-first century chart that leans heavily on elements of nostalgia familiar to any football fan. The result is a modern, minimal A1 poster, limited to just 150 copies, that is adorned with rows of lightly debossed circles filled with a subtle clear foil – each pair representing a match at this year’s tournament. Accompanying the chart is a sticker pack – a nod to the famous Panini books of our youth – which includes Studio Blackburn’s colourful, graphic interpretations of the jerseys of each participating nation.
Of course, there’s no obligation to put your stickers on the wall chart. We wanted to be mindful of the different relationships that people would have with their charts – some might choose to leave theirs blank, others might like to use it as a means of predicting results. For those using theirs in a more traditional way, the progression of the tournament turns the chart to a sea of colour, as matches are played and more stickers applied. Exactly what colour combination we will have, come the final in the Stade de France on July 9th, however, remains to be seen.
