Nike Hypervenom Packaging

by Donna Creek

There was huge anticipation for the launch of Nike’s new football boot, the Hypervenom, this May. The much hyped boot, launched under the banner of A New Breed of Attack was designed for superb fit, unparalleled  ball control and ultimate traction and was delivered to the likes of the Barcelona striker Neymar da Silva Santos and Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney in a custom-made boot box that Nirvana manufactured on behalf of AKQA.

The box was made from three kinds of acrylic, with an integral metal laser-cut, powder coated skull and crossbones fan and grills. The front of the box housed an iPad running an app of a digital counter that counted down the time to when the box would open to reveal the boots. The box sides carried pulsing light panels and the lid was designed with a soft close mechanism to ensure it didn’t slam shut onto the boots. As the box opened, the hinged lid automatically raised an internal orange glowing platform on which the boots were presented. Watch here to see how it was made //

Nirvana created eight personalised boxes for an exclusive group of global football stars, and one lucky Nike customer who was the first European customer to place an order for a pair of Hypervenom boots and the first twenty customers at the London Nike store. Along with the box was a screen printed and spot varnished card, sealed with a wax stamp into a bespoke black envelope.
