Presentation Box

by Nirvana CPH

Founders of Dovedale, Charl Heynike, a luxury product designer and Oliver Tebbutt, a cabinetmaker have collaborated on a new design project; a set of handcrafted Japanese styled Damascus folded steel knives.

The folded blue paper steel blades set in wooden handles and arranged in a presentation box are both fashioned out of thousands-of-years old petrified bog oak from north Cambridgeshire.

The blades are forged using sand smelting methods used in traditional Japanese sword making, folding the steel 400 times to increase strength and create the distinctive ‘Damascus’ pattern.

Dovedale approached Nirvana to produce bespoke packaging for the wooden presentation box. This packaging needed to be long lasting and of the highest quality to withstand repeated opening and removal of the wooden box for generations to come. Our team of creative producers worked up a number of box prototypes using paper wrapped over a 3mm board, ensuring the boxes fit perfectly around the product. An internal card platform was developed to raise the box and make the heavier larger knife sets easier to remove and ensured that everything was held securely in transit.

The box needed to compliment the Japanese aesthetic of the product so a 120gsm black twist paper was used to wrap the box giving a luxurious textured finish. This paper was also used to produce the branded booklet telling the story of Dovedale with saddle stitch binding and a subtle debossed logo.
