Nirvana were asked to get involved with Happy Thursdays, eight consumer events held at the Covent Garden store every two weeks for two months. Running from 6pm for three hours, each event was themed – from a book salon, live window illustrations, a Day Disco, to New York themed snacks in Sips and Snacks – and customers could come and mingle, have fun and try something new. There were a host of talented collaborators, including DJs Sophie Ellis-Bextor and her husband and The Feeling bassist Richard Jones, Becky Tong and Mary Charteris. The Book Salon was hosted by Sasha Wilkins, fashion magazine writer and blogger Libertylondongirl.com.
We produced a ‘time lapse’ film that captured illustrator Bryony Fripp in action as she created illustrations of some of the customers. We shot it in real time using two DSLR cameras and a selection of lenses, and then the footage was sped up in post production to anywhere between double and 20-times speed. The resulting sequences were edited together to form a snappy, condensed montage of the artist at work, evoking the frantic, high-pressure live constraints of her improvisational task. The all-digital edit was then graded and stylised to appear like a vintage time-lapse production shot on film in stop-motion. Watch Bryony’s live illustration here.
We also produced three shorts to summarise the theme of each corresponding Happy Thursdays event.
