Since its inauguration in 2002, Art Basel Miami Beach – the Stateside spin-off of European stalwart Art Basel – has established itself as one of the most anticipated art fairs of the year, bringing together stars new and old from across the globe for a week of sea, sun and shoulder-rubbing on the Florida coast. And as stars of the art world go, they don’t get much bigger than Andy Warhol.
In collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) teamed up with The Skateroom – an organisation that invites creative expression by asking artists to design visuals for skateboards – to create an immersive experience for the 2015 event in the city’s Delano Hotel, which celebrated its twentieth birthday in December.
32 unique decks featuring Warhol’s iconic ‘32 Campbell’s Soup Cans’ were displayed in the hotel between 30th November and 6th December, alongside a set of eight decks bearing his ‘Colored Campbell’s Soup Cans’, as well as triptychs showing ‘Gold Marilyn Monroe’, ‘Guns’, ‘Car Crash’, ‘Self Portrait’ and ‘Detail of the Last Supper’. A limited number of the decks were later made available for sale, with the proceeds donated to The Skateroom’s non-profit partner Skateistan, an NGO committed to improving the lives of young people in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa through skateboarding and education.
Nirvana were delighted to be asked to produce the predictably witty packaging for this unique project – 100 giant Campbell’s Soup Cans, two of which were placed in the Delano for the duration of the exhibition, capable of housing all of the ‘32 Campbell’s Soup Cans’ decks. The remaining 98 will be shipped to those who invest in a complete set of 32 decks, and a slice of true skateboarding history.
